Perfectly located for easy access to London, the Gatwick Diamond stretches from Croydon down to Brighton, centering around London Gatwick Airport and the hubs of Crawley, Horsham, Burgess Hill, Redhill/Reigate, Dorking/Leatherhead, creating a gateway to the UK’s most important air, land, rail and sea routes critical for export and overseas trade.
Gatwick Diamond is home to London Gatwick Airport – the UK’s second largest airport which flies a range of both short and long-haul point-to-point services. During 2019, it connected 46 million passengers to around 230 destinations in 70 countries.
90% of the UK population is within four-and-a-half hours driving time of Gatwick Diamond.
Nearly 90% of homes and businesses have access to superfast broadband.
In addition to a strong demographic base, there are excellent rail and road connections from London, through the heart of the Gatwick Diamond, to Brighton and the south coast with links to international seaports and the Continent.
As well as providing key trade routes, this connectivity brings people together for knowledge sharing, innovation and flexible working. It also enables more people to enjoy the high quality of town and country living that the Gatwick Diamond offers while being in easy reach of key employment centres.
With strong road and rail links to London, Gatwick and Heathrow airports and motorway connections across the South East and beyond, Surrey is also a well-placed location for business investment and is home to many high-profile names including Pfizer, Fidelity International plus in close proximity McLaren, Toyota, Exxon, Atkins and Unilever.
The region is at the forefront of the development of state-of-the art digital infrastructure in the UK with leading projects in Crawley, Horsham and Burgess Hill.
Burgess Hill’s Gigabit fibre network infrastructure is connecting tech clusters across the region, powering the digital and green innovation which will underpin Mid Sussex’s ambition to build sustainable and resilient communities.
Nearly nine out of 10 homes and businesses (86%) already have access to superfast broadband and work is progressing on the development of the superfast fibre network across Burgess Hill with its onward connections to Crawley and Brighton. The Gigabit-capable digital fibre network will connect tech clusters in Brighton, Crawley and London to regional and local businesses, enhancing the immediate opportunity for digital skills and tech start-up companies, through its reliable and ultrafast connectivity speeds.
Both Crawley and Horsham are among pipeline locations under a nationwide project to improve fibre connectivity in homes and businesses. This includes not just connecting existing businesses and homes, but is also open to property developers who can ensure their future commercial or residential schemes are included too.
The £4bn Gigabit City Investment Programme will provide business-grade, gigabit-capable full fibre connectivity to towns and cities across the UK. Installation has begun in the Crawley districts of Ifield, Broadfield and Gossops Green and it is estimated the entire town will be completed by summer 2023. Horsham District Council is also part of the project, and several of its borough-run public buildings have been connected, such as the Horsham Museum and the Capitol Theatre.
West Sussex County Council is leading on this project, where CityFibre installs the gigabit-capable full-fibre broadband infrastructure, and will then take part in a Government-backed review that will call on suppliers to come forward with their market proposals in five areas of the country.
