The Gatwick Diamond Initiative has welcomed the UK Government’s support for infrastructure growth, highlighting London Gatwick Airport’s proposed Northern Runway as a less disruptive, quicker to build and more cost-effective to deliver than Heathrow’s recently approved third runway.
The government’s backing of Heathrow’s expansion has reignited discussions on UK airport capacity, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves citing economic benefits such as a projected 0.4% GDP boost by 2050 and the creation of 100,000 jobs.
Business groups supporting London Gatwick’s Northern Runway project argue that similar benefits could be achieved at Gatwick, with a £2 billion private sector investment expected to generate 14,000 new jobs and contribute £1 billion annually to the economy. The Secretary of State for Transport is due to announce her decision on the London Gatwick Northern Runway on the 27th of March.
Brett North, Chairman of the Gatwick Diamond Initiative, said: “We welcome the UK Government’s backing of aviation’s crucial role in meeting the country’s growth challenge. We are pleased to see the Government taking a more balanced approach to developing infrastructure.
“Gatwick’s Northern Runway project can be delivered far more quickly than Heathrow’s third runway, with significantly fewer environmental and political challenges. Expanding Gatwick within its existing footprint offers a pragmatic way to boost aviation capacity while avoiding the delays and controversies surrounding Heathrow.”
Support for Gatwick’s Northern Runway project continues to grow, with over 174 business organisations representing 104,000 members nationwide calling on the UK Government to approve the expansion.
This marks an increase from 2023, when 52 groups representing 55,000 members backed the proposal, reflecting a rising demand for investment in UK aviation.
A joint letter from business groups – including the London Chamber of Commerce, CBI London, and the Institute of Directors Sussex – emphasised Gatwick’s role in supporting economic growth, job creation, and aviation resilience.
Brett North added: “We are pleased, but not surprised, by the level of support for this crucial infrastructure project. London Gatwick’s Northern Runway is a vital step for the South East economy and beyond. It’s about an invigorated UK transport infrastructure bringing London Gatwick, Heathrow, the Lower Thames Crossing, Oxcam Arc and others together to drive the massive economic growth our communities need.
“It’s backed by private money, will drive growth, create jobs, and ensure the region remains competitive. This investment reflects London Gatwick’s dedication to strengthening local and national economic resilience.”
With increasing business support and alignment with government priorities, Gatwick’s Northern Runway project remains a key contender in the UK’s long-term airport expansion plans.
