The government has confirmed Sussex, along with Brighton & Hove, will be one of six English regions to be accepted onto the Devolution Priority Programme, with Mayors to be elected by May 2026. In addition, Surrey will become one of four devolved non-mayoral Single Local Authorities.
Last month, the government invited councils across England to consider being part of its accelerated programme for reform, which aims to simplify and streamline local government.
The government believes greater devolution is key to unlocking regional growth, delivering on its Plan for Change, empowering local communities to direct change and drive economic growth, skills and jobs.
Those regions on the Devolution Priority Programme will now work to an ambitious devolution timetable, with full government backing, with consultations set to launch shortly.
