Led by two former University of Surrey PhD researchers, the company is working to transform the chemical industry with its groundbreaking and Power-to-X technology for producing green ammonia.
Rhizo PTX was founded by Dr Ash Stott and Dr Ben Kyffin, who both hold PhDs from the University of Surrey, and several years of industrial experience – Ash in Electrochemical Devices and Ben in Advanced Materials Chemistry.
Their one-step electrochemical system directly transforms nitrogen and water into green ammonia, which refers to ammonia made with zero carbon emissions.
Rhizo PTX’s cutting-edge approach revolutionises current green ammonia production methods. By using a one-step process, it eliminates the need for green hydrogen – making the process more efficient, scalable and easier to power with renewable energy. Ammonia is the second most-produced chemical on the planet making up a $90 billion global market. It is currently used for many industrial processes such as fertiliser manufacturing. However, production is highly carbon-intensive, accounting for around 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Green ammonia can decarbonise existing industries as well as provide a highly efficient zero-carbon fuel.
As more sectors seek alternatives to fossil fuels, the green ammonia market is now poised for major growth, with the industry expected to be worth over $250 billion by 2050. By scaling up its Power-to-X technology, Rhizo PTX aims to be well-positioned to capitalise on this growth, while making a significant step towards global decarbonisation.
